Jakarta (Greeners) – Ministry of Environment and Forestry encourages environmental agency in each province to immediately set up Regional Peatland Restoration Team as stipulated by Presidential Regulation No. 1/2016 on Peat Restoration Agency.
Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya said that the agency was tasked to coordinate and facilitate peat restoration of a total of two million hectares in Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan and Papua provinces in five years.
“That is why we hope for governors can take the responsibility and cooperate with National Army, the police, universities, regional environmental agencies, ministry of environment and forestry, forestry agency, agriculture agency, to field activities in district/cities, sub-districts and villages,” she said in Jakarta, on Thursday (24/3).
Nazir Foead, chief of Peat Restoration Agency, said the agency had planned to restore 30 percent out of two million hectares, in Pulang Pisau of Central Kalimantan, Musi Banyuasin and Ogan Kemiring Ilir of South Sumatra, and Meranti Island of Riau.
Nazir added that the agency had also prepared a map scale of 1:50000 to support the restoration.
“The agency has been preparing technical guidance for the physical and social activities which are expected to be completed this March,” he said.
