An Open Letter For Greenpeace Indonesia

Reading time: 3 menit

Here is Emmy Hafild’s full open letter received by Greeners :

“To Executive Director of GPSEA.

With this letter, I decide to renounce as supporter for Greenpeace Indonesia because I am disappointed and angry with Greenpeace’s constructive engagement strategy with big companies involved in peatlands fires. This haze tragedy affected 50 million people, more than 540,000 of them suffered respiratory issues and trillion of rupiah of economic losses.

The involvement of major companies, which are cooperating with Greenpeance, has become public facts and issues for the past three months. There is no need for further verification for Greenpeace to re-position the strategy.

Public opinion is clear for those companies to be tried, revoked their licenses and given large amount of fine. Greenpeace does not have to hesitate to re-position this strategy. Burned areas in their concessions areas have shown that constructive engagement strategy implemented by Greenpeace since 2013 is a total failure.

It is like war, ‘you are with the people or against the people’. There is no grey area, only black and white. This is a matter of conscience and there is no need for long discussion to make a stand. This haze tragedy has been going for three months, it is enough time for Greenpeace to review its strategy and determine their action and it failed to be done by Greenpeace.

With that attitude, for the past few years, there are no significant movements from Greenpeace and it is very difficult to state that Greenpeace brings benefit for Indonesians. If in this biggest environmental tragedy, Greenpeace could not repositioning with Indonesians, it is better for Greenpeace Indonesia just to be dissolved.

However, I honor the request from Green Peace Association Board which is legal body of Greenpeace in Indonesia to give them the chance to write a letter to GPSEA Board and have another dialog on this matter.

If in one week time there is no position changes in Greenpeace, I am going to write an open letter for dissolving Greenpeace for choosing to side with companies involved with forest fires rather than with Indonesian people.

I also call for all Greenpeace Indonesia supporters to stop their support and push for Greenpeace to repositioning strategy constructive engagement and with Indonesian people to face this strategy. It is better that their money donated to Greenpeace every month to be allocated to deal and prevent peatland fires.”
